Diego Carrete shares his top recommendations

There is nothing better than relaxing by the pool, enjoying the sunshine and having a great time with friends or family. However, it can be hard to make healthy food choices at these places, when there are often sugary drinks, fried food and all sorts of other temptations on offer!

As a fitness expert, I love to help people feel their best, so here are my tips to making better food choices on your next Privilee day.

Fruits

Fruits are a great choice for snacking or adding to any meal, especially those with a high water content, such as watermelon. This will help you stay hydrated and is also very tasty!

Other options that are good for keeping you fuller for longer are blueberries and strawberries, as they are high in fibre.

Sandwiches and bagels

It’s perfectly fine to include carbohydrates in your diet, they’re essential for energy and fueling your body! However, you can be more mindful when ordering and choose an option without a high calorie sauce, such as mayonnaise for example or go for feta cheese instead of cheddar.

I often choose a salmon and cream cheese bagel as salmon is a great source of healthy fats and vitamins, the bagel keeps me fuller for longer and cream cheese is high in vitamin A - plus you can get low-fat options at some places.

Salads

Salads are a great option to eat by the pool and the perfect way to get your five a day! Ensure you pick an option with a protein, like chicken, tofu or shrimp and add some nuts if you can - walnuts and cashews are great snacks to eat to stay fuller for longer. If you're calorie counting, I’d recommend getting dressing on the side and try to avoid foods high in fat, like avocado and certain cheeses. I like to make my salads as colourful as possible - with lots of veggies and fruits; peppers, spinach, mushrooms, pomegranate and even apples make a salad much more interesting.

Main courses

When you’re ordering, try to keep in mind that protein-rich foods help to keep us fuller for longer - dark leafy and bean salads, grilled meats and fish are great sources, and most of these are options on pool/beach bar menus. Even a burger would be a good choice - just be light with the sauces and cheese, maybe even go for a whole wheat bun if you can!
